Mamita’s House is about a Native California Indian family who lived in the house depicted on the cover of the book.  They lived during the depression years in Carmel, California in  a neighborhood called Tortilla Flat. John Steinbeck came to Mamita’ house to drink coffee and gather material for his book Tortilla Flat,  published in 1935, his first great success.  His characters were based on the people he met at Mamita’s House though his story was not about this family.
This book is the real story of Tortilla Flat. It tells how revered Mamita used her resourcefulness and compassion to bring her large family through the trying depression years.  In Mamita’s story the family celebrated and played, remembered their traditions and met the challenges of difficult times.
